There was once a time in the photography industry when any and all imperfections found in an image were considered undesirable. It was largely believed that the clearer and cleaner an image, the better said image was overall and the truer the end result. Over time, however, photographers began to experiment with stylistic alterations, eventually leading many to adopt purposeful imperfections in the name of setting themselves apart and crafting more individual imagery. Now, these stylistic flourishes are almost the norm — to the point that some photographers (and cinematographers, by extension) are known for particular ones. One of the most easily recognizable examples of this is filmmaker JJ Abrams and his penchant for lens flares — an effect characterized by light scattered through a camera lens to create a kind of bleeding, blinding effect (something that occurs naturally in the human eye when looking at a bright light, especially for those with astigmatism). It’s that very effect that has inspired this week’s everyday carry loadout, which includes polished metal-accented gear for light to glint and glimmer upon.
Killspencer AirTag Keychain
If you want to take advantage of Apple’s new AirTag GPS pucks, especially in an everyday carry capacity, it might be handy to have a keychain that accepts them, like the Killspencer AirTag Keychain you see here. Complete with a top-grain leather sheath and an included all-black keyring, this is the perfect way to ensure that you never lose your keys and any keychain accessories and tools alongside them.
CRKT Pilar III Folding Knife
The third evolution of Jesper Voxnaes’ Hemingway-inspired Pilar knife (named after the late author’s famed fishing boat), this version was designed to perfectly balance minimalist design with maximum utility. It’s marked by a somewhat aggressively styled 8Cr13MoV drop point blade, a single G10 handle scale on one side with a stainless steel one opposite (complete with an integrated frame lock), and a buttery-smooth IKBS ball bearing deployment system. This is a worthy EDC knife that you’ll find yourself turning to each and every day, should you be smart enough to snatch one up.
Vuarnet District 2103 Sunglasses
Vuarnet’s round-framed District 2103 sunglasses were made to be simple, but that doesn’t mean they’re not special. In fact, along with their stylish, contemporary shape, this version comes with silver-finished mineral glass lenses that perfectly render colors, offer 100% UV protection, 93% blue light protection, and they’re backed by an anti-reflective finish. Pick up these shades and they’re likely to quickly become your go-to pair.
Unimatic U3-F Chrono Diver Watch
Since Unimatic only makes limited edition watches, this one is already in short supply; in fact, only 600 were built in total. Of course, even without rarity, this would be an exceptional dive watch. It’s marked by a formidable 316 stainless steel case, an always-accurate Seiko meca-quartz movement, and the brand’s ever-stylish minimalist styling. And while most people will probably pick this up as a style piece, you can rest easy knowing it is also water-resistant to depths of up to 300m.
