Though recliners offer an incredibly comfortable lounging experience, the style of chair has typically been viewed as rather inelegant, bordering on low brow. Wanting to change the public’s perception of the recliner, Design Within Reach (or DWR) has tasked Hlynur Atlason with giving the La-Z-Boy-style chair a style-conscious redesign, resulting in the DWR Vala Swivel Recliner.
Touted as the “recliner that doesn’t look like a recliner,” the Vala features a round, modern design in which the seat, seatback, and footrest all move independently. This allows the piece of furniture to resemble an ordinary reading chair when not opened/reclined. Further distancing it from conventional recliners is the Vala’s minimal footprint, measuring just 32” W x 36” D. The Vala is also available with a black or bare aluminum base and offered in seven leather color options, six pebble weave fabrics, a trio of Maharam Modes, and half-a-dozen Pecora fabrics. The enormous number of color and material options allow the Vala to blend into a wide variety of settings, too. Backed by a one-year warranty, the Design Within Reach Vala Swivel Recliner is available for purchase now, starting from $3,295.
