Disney Shows Off Its ‘Real’ Extending Lightsaber Tech For Star Wars Day

Just in time for Star Wars Day, the Walt Disney Company is giving us our first official glimpse at their new “real” lightsaber tech. And, to put it simply, it’s spectacular.

To mark May the 4th, Disney Parks released a video teaser of the new lightsaber in action. The brief clip features a Disney cast member dressed as Rey as she unsheathes her lightsaber. From the iconic sound to the slow growth of the glowing blade, everything about the elegant weapon is pitch-perfect. And while Disney is keeping how the lightsaber works under wraps (for now), you will get the chance to see it in action up close someday soon. The “real” lightsaber will be featured as part of an immersive two-night adventure known as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser that’s coming to Orlando’s Walt Disney World Resort in 2022. The all-encompassing experience promises total immersion in the Star Wars universe, as guests will interact with characters, alter their own storyline through their conversations and actions, and participate in activities — including lightsaber training. It’s unclear if the lightsabers used by the public will be these new “real” ones, or if those are reserved strictly for cast members, but we’re sure to find out more information before the adventures begin next year.
