Based in Sondrio, EV + A lab is an Italian architecture firm headed up by Alfredo Vanotti. On top of being known for combining classic local building aesthetics with modern materials and visual themes, the Italian firm places an immense focus on blending its architectural works into the projects’ land and typography in order to optimize sunlight, wind-protection, and the views of its surroundings. And these signature qualities are in full effect on EV + A lab’s most recent architectural masterpiece, Casa G.
Nestled on the side of a mountain on the Rhaetian side of the Alps, Casa G is partially built into the hillside, with the modern rectangular structure blending into its surroundings thanks to a grass-lined living roof garden. An elaborate Swiss-designed frameless system of sliding windows allows the entire 115’ glass wall to open up, looking out onto the matching 115’ infinity pool, while just below there’re views of a local vineyard and off in the distance the residence affords views of the Orobian Alps and a local lake. Juxtaposing Vanotti’s design is a classic Spanish Mission-style bell tower, just behind the property, wonderfully blending old and new aesthetics.
