Casa Bruma By Fernanda Canales

When you purchase the perfect plot of land to build your dream home, you can find your dreams compromised quickly as a result of the land and architect’s limitations — but designer Fernanda Canales refused to let her clients settle. Instead, she allowed the natural landscape to guide her modern and creative private retreat near Mexico City. Without cutting down trees or removing vegetation, Canales built Casa Bruma — a nine-pavilion dreamscape surrounding a tranquil inner courtyard.

The black concrete exterior of each building blends well into the complex ecosystem, with green roofs on some structures to accentuate the natural surroundings. Each of the nine independent structures is connected via stone pathways across multiple levels. The area suffers extremely low temperatures in the early mornings and late evenings, so the home was designed to make the most of the available sunlight by adding large courtyard-facing windows to the kitchen — turning into a semi-outdoor living space that functions as the heart of this stunning home.
