For those who live and breath digital photography, the pace at which technology has been improving is likely unremarkable. But for an outsider who keeps looser tabs on the space, announcements like Canon’s Powershot G1 X Mark III can come across as jaw-dropping.

Despite its small size and simple point and shoot functionality, this camera has an incredibly robust set of capabilities. The most notable change is the use of the 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. Up until this point, the APS-C has been exclusively used in DSLR bodies. Now, set into the Powershot, it has given this camera the ability to shoot incredibly high quality images with low noise even at a high ISO. But there is more going on here than just a new sensor. The G1 X Mark III also features a 14-72mm wide angle zoom lens with 3x optical zoom, an f/2.8-5.6 aperture, the ability to shoot up to 9fps, and an ISO range of 100 up to 25,600. And for those who like to take a quick look at what they’ve shot, the PowerShot also boasts a 3-inch LCD touch screen. Let’s see your camera phone do that.

Purchase: $1,300
