For the past five years, the Wheels & Waves Festival has brought custom bikes, art, music and the adventurous individuals to France’s coastal Atlantic town of Biarritz. In fact, Wheels & Waves soon became home to a unique type of bike culture, turning it into a legendary event. This year, BMW Motorrad is presenting a new interpretation of the companies well-known R nineT: the Concept Lac Rose.
Taking its nomenclature from the French name for the rose-colored Reba salt lake, located 35 kilometers Northeast of Dakar- the terminus of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally that takes competitors through many harsh desert stages- this concept pays tribute to the motorcycle ridden by Gaston Rahier when he won the 1985 race.
The bike hosts much of the typical features of the former winning motorcycle such as the windshield, headlamp design, high mudguard, large fuel tank, and short rally seat bench. It’s designed as a laid-back roadster with sharp off-road capabilities to allow the rider to ditch the asphalt at a moment’s notice. It also features the staple BMW two-cylinder flat twin engine with shaft drive located at the center while a proactive headlamp grill, oil cooler protector and a perforated underside guard bring it into the 21st century. It will be launched at this year’s festival but we’re still waiting to see if it will become available for purchase. Until then, dream on copains.
