Burnt Wood Villa By Mecanoo

When you live in a lakefront villa, one of the most important factors to take into account is the connection that the building has with the surrounding elements. The architects at the Netherlands based Mecanoo have struck the perfect balance with their newest project, the Burnt Wood Villa, utilizing transparent construction and environmental immersion in a single, stunning dwelling.

The glass-covered home is located just outside of Lechlade, United Kingdom, and was built from the inside out to ensure a meaningful connection with the surrounding environment. Situated among a vibrant oasis of green foliage and natural timber, the dwelling utilizes a dual terrace construction, complete with an unobstructed 360-degree view, that allows it to be anchored to the landmass — a foundational requirement for its above-water protrusion. The exterior of the secluded home is adorned in burnt timber — a byproduct of Sugi Ban, the ancient Japanese art of subtly burning wood prior to construction to allow for a long lasting, fire resistant finish that’s free of any chemical or preservative influence. Along with a purposefully muted color palette, the interior of the home is split into different subdivisions to allow for its intimate, secluded rooms to retain a large, spacious feel. A centralized atrium showers the living space in natural light and helps to connect the home into one seamless space.
