Over eight decades ago BMW introduced what was then a groundbreaking technological development that influenced motorcycle construction right on up through the 1950s. Known as the BMW R5, this bike was a highly-improved-upon rendition of the sports motorbikes of that time. Now, to mark this 80th anniversary, BMW Motorrad, in conjunction with Unique Custom Cycles, are releasing a tribute to this classic renegade of a bike: The BMW R5 Hommage.
At the bike’s core lies an original 500 cc two-cylinder engine to fit the custom build, that happens to be hand-crafted from scratch. Simply put, it’s a blend of history and modern bike building that merge to create one beautiful machine. Additionally, several of the Hommage’s custom-made parts include the valve covers and breastplate which were machined from billet aluminum. The frame, fuel tank, and rear fender mimic the style of the original but with more modern, streamlined shapes that bring this classic into the 21st-century aesthetic. The oval-shaped frame tubing remains, however, leading the eye in continuous form from the steering head to the rear wheel hub. Truly a work of art.
