Auction Block: Robert Redford’s 1964 Porsche 904 GTS

The year 1964 was notable for Porsche, with a number of the German automaker’s famed flat-four vehicles being phased out for the more illustrious 904 GTS. The primary focus was geared toward the production of the next “big” contender for the European racing circuit, a stage that was primed and ready for the new 904.

The car isn’t without its legacy, securing a number of historic racing victories in multiple classes — oftentimes, against cars with larger displacement engines. This five-speed manual transaxle GTS, in particular, has a storied past — passing through a number of affluent hands before settling with its most recent owner. Originally, the 175bhp racer belonged to Steve Earle, the founder of Monterey Historic Races at the famed Laguna Seca. After retiring the car, he sold it to a secondary owner, where it found new life as a personal track vehicle. In 1966, actor Robert Redford purchased the 904 GTS, where it would remain for at least a decade before being sold and upgraded to a two-liter flat-six engine utilized in early Porsche 911 models by its procurer. The car is being offered through Bonhams for an estimated $1,400,000 — and even comes with a slew of original documentation that confirms the original bodywork, transaxle, and chassis of the car.

Purchase: $1,400,000+
