In our time, we’ve seen plenty of Frankenstein jobs done to vehicles. And most of them are as monstrous as Mary Shelly’s iconic creature. But, every once in a while, we come across one that’s not only well-done, but also tasteful and honestly desirable. That’s the case with this 1978 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser up for auction on BringaTrailer.

From the outside, this looks like a perfectly good example of one of Toyota’s classic SUVs. And we like that about it. But we also like what the previous owner did under the hood: swap out the stock engine for a more powerful Pace Performance 310 horsepower V8 engine. And, although it’s got more power, it still functions via a 4-speed gearbox, thanks to the inclusion of an adapter plate. We’re also quite fond of the fact that this Land Cruiser is a convertible. Yes, the hard top can be entirely removed for when you want to turn your daily driver into a summer-ready beach cruiser. As of right now, the current bid sits at $12,000 – but don’t expect it to stay there.

Purchase: $12,000+
