The 1960s were a favorable time for today’s classic car manufacturers, with the release of countless modern-day favorites that are envied by collectors the world over. One of the most prolific vehicles from the era was produced by none other than Shelby — an iconic Cobra roadster that would remain one of the most sought after vehicles for years to come.
This particular 1965 Shelby Cobra R is one of just two “R-Spec” CSX4000-series vehicles, utilizing an astounding carbon fiber bodywork that was professionally built courtesy of New York’s HRE Motorcars. Alongside Shelby’s fabricated excellence, a 427 CID OHV V-8 engine and four-barrel Holley carburetor help to produce a staggering 700-horsepower that’s pushed to the pavement through the use of a five-speed manual gearbox. Four-wheel Brembo hydraulic disk brakes and an independent Bilstein Coilover suspension give the car exceptional performance figures, while an aluminum-head 427 built by NASCAR legend Ernie Elliot serves to add some spice to the setup. The Shelby will be available in this year’s Amelia Island Auction on March 8, so if you’re interested in owning a piece of classic car history, head on over to Gooding & Company’s website to find out some more information.
