As is the case with supercars and hypercars, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when American muscle was born. But there’s a pretty good contender in what started out as an upgrade package to GM’s Tempest LeMans. We are, of course, talking about the GTO. Now, a near-immaculate example of one of these four-wheeled classics is headed to auction.
Once housed as an attraction at Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville, Tennessee but now headed home with some lucky such-and-such, this 360 horsepower beast is powered by the same 389 cubic-inch V8 flathead engine found in all other GTOs. But this specific one is extra special because – first – it’s a member of the first generation of GTOs – and second – it’s equipped with dual inline 4-barrel carburetors Pontiac intended to offer on the ’65, but never did – making it a true one-of-a-kind vehicle. It also features an upgraded Turbo 350 automatic transmission, rare aluminum front brake drums, and slick dashboard wood paneling with a matching steering wheel. No starting bid dollar amount has been announced yet.
