There are few automotive manufacturers who have etched their name into the annals of history with their legendary accomplishments, but the Porsche brand has consistently proven that they belong in the winner’s circle with their elegant, powerful designs. The 550 RS Spyder was one such vehicle — a perfect amalgamation of style and poise that, among an impressive catalog of alternative iconic autos, helped to catapult Porshe down the path of modern victors.
The 1956 RS Spyder is one of the most critically acclaimed cars of all time, boasting an extremely limited run of 90 units over its three-year lifespan, making it all the rarer. With an impressive naturally aspirated air-cooled flat four boxer engine known as the “Fuhrmann,” the car saw impressive success on the track and finished in the top three of nearly every competition it entered. In the vein of its original all-intensive racing purpose, the car brought Porsche its first major win at a racing event during the 1956 Targa Florio. Now, a procurer of one of the original models has decided to part ways with the famed vehicle, which is being auctioned off in visibly immaculate condition at the 2019 RM Sotheby’s in Paris, France.
