A lot of us like to think that the only classic off-road SUVs worth giving a second look were made either in America or England. But the folks at a well-known Italian manufacturer have a seemingly forgotten ace up their sleeve: the 1952 Alfa Romeo 1900 M AR 51 ‘Matta.’

Developed for military use, this SUV was nicknamed ‘Matta’ – the Italian word for ‘crazy’ – because of how incredibly capable it was off-road. This particular model was produced for the Italian Army through 1954 and were kept in service until the 1970s, when they were sold to the public. This one, built fairly early in the ~2,000 unit run, has had 5 owners, but recently benefitted from a comprehensive restoration to get it back to original military standards. And, though the vehicle is incredibly special itself, it also comes with a classic 20-liter gas can, tool roll, and dual spare tires – adding to the authenticity and individuality. It’s estimated to sell for between $45,000 and $55,000 USD.

Purchase: $45,000+
