With human space exploration evolving at breakneck speed, it’s not farfetched to think that we’ll see the first manned missions to Mars (and beyond) sooner, rather than later. That being said, there are a few skills that we need to brush up on before we can begin the Red Planet’s initial colonization, including specialized environmental training, survival techniques, and mental readiness.
Luckily, Spain’s Astroland Agency is here to ensure that you’ll be ready when you take your first steps on Mars’ surface, thanks to a one-of-a-kind training program that’s been tailored toward realism. Initially, participants will partake in virtual courses to garner knowledge on the necessary skills they’ll need, and eventually take, to the new frontier of exploration. In this case, ten special individuals will be selected to make the journey to Ares Station, a large training ground embedded in one of Spain’s most secluded caverns. To simulate extreme isolation and mimic the planet’s bleak environment, Astroland participants will spend their time building/evolving a makeshift colony — farming, cooking, exercising, and learning about cutting-edge technologies that will be used in future space missions.
