Apple’s Diverse Emojis
Ok, sure, realism is not priority #1 when sending an emoji-filled text message. But still, would it kill the powers that be to recognize the other flavors in the skin tone rainbow? No, apparently it would not kill anyone at all, because the new version of Apple’s iOS X operating system will soon let you send “racially diverse” emojis to anyone who appreciates a little color in their life.
Apple has consistently said it was the Unicode Consortium (the group technically responsible for emoji standardization) that was holding up the smiley face melting pot, but that group has now relented and six skin tones will soon be available. When you choose an emoji that features a person, you’ll then get a dropdown menu of your skin color options. Note that this will only be available for individual human emoji, not couples or groups. Baby steps, man. Progress comes in baby steps.
