Wireless smart airbag rigs represent the pinnacle of protection in the motorcycle gear segment, and though these advanced systems have been commercially available for street and track riders for the past few years, the industry has yet to see an airbag setup developed specifically for off-road use. Alpinestars is changing that, however, with the unveiling of its new Tech-Air Off-Road Airbag System.
Rather than being a vest, this new off-road smart airbag is built into a rugged textile base-layer shirt with integrated Bionic Pro v2 armor at the chest, elbows, shoulders, and spine. Just like how Astar’s previous Tech-Air systems were extensively tested by top-level MotoGP and WSBK riders before a production version became available to the public, this new dirt-ready version has been used and developed by a myriad of Dakar Rally competitors and winners, including the factory Honda and KTM Red Bull teams. Receiving data from a bevy of gyroscopes, accelerometers, and other onboard sensors, the Tech-Air Off-Road system relies on an ultra-complex crash detection algorithm developed solely for off-road and rally use, which involves far more variables than rigs for the road or race track. The system’s pricing and release date have yet to be revealed, though more information will be announced in 2021.
