Adidas Revives An Innovative 1980s Kevlar Running Shoe For The Modern Era

First debuting in 1984, adidas’ ZX series was a game-changing range of ever-evolving running shoes, largely characterized by its innovative use of proprietary materials and technologies such as Soft Cell cushioning and the German activewear brand’s TORSION bar system—elements that remain on adidas’ footwear offerings today. And after unveiling an updated iteration of the ZX range with the ZX 8000 shoe in 2014, adidas has once again looked to the bar-raising range of 1980s running shoes, this time delivering a modern version of the company’s ZX 5000.

Christened the “ZX 5000 TORSION,” this new shoe is one of 26 new hybrid models from adidas’ A-ZX series that fuses classic heritage silhouettes with modern-day materials, technologies, and construction techniques. As such, the ZX5KT utilizes the distinctive colorway of the original late-‘80s shoe and is bestowed with the brand’s mid-foot stability-bolstering TORSION bar. What’s more, Kevlar has been used to strengthen the shoe’s uppers, proving ample durability without compromising flexibility, comfort, or movement. Scheduled for a release on January 22, 2021, the adidas ZX 5000 TORSION shoes are available for preorder now, with pricing set at $140.
