A few weeks back, Honda teased the impending arrival of a new off-road trim level called TrailSport. Now, that label has arrived as a special edition of the redesigned 2022 Honda Passport, with the Trailsport edition of the SUV representing a new direction for the rugged capabilities of Honda’s light trucks and SUVs.
First things first, the base 2022 Passport is already more rugged than the outgoing version, with more aggressive styling, larger exhaust outlets, and up to 8.1” of ground clearance. The TrailSport version dials up the intensity even more by adding custom touches throughout. There’s a unique grille treatment, along with more rugged front and rear bumpers. Orange TrailSport badges can be found on the grille and tailgate, and i-VTM4 all-wheel drive with true torque vectoring comes standard on the TrailSport. The TrailSport’s 18-inch wheels with pewter-painted highlights are custom, and the truck’s front and rear track widths have both seen a 10 mm increase in order to improve stance and stability. You’ll also find thoughtful technological niceties, like side mirrors that fold in at the press of a button for traversing narrow passes and a heated windshield wiper parking area to keep ice at bay.
Honda has yet to reveal pricing or a release date for the 2022 Passport TrailSport, but the SUV should arrive sooner rather than later. And while we may have wanted to see a bit more off-road capability, Honda has stated that future TrailSport models will incorporate more rugged features, including more aggressive tires and off-road-tuned suspension.
