Over the years, Ford has built out its best-selling Explorer line to cater to drivers of all kinds. Whether you’re after the budget-conscious base model, the off-road-ready Timberline trim, or even the ultra-premium Platinum edition, chances are pretty good that there’s an SUV perfect for you.
For 2022, Ford is updating the range with two new offerings, including a rear-wheel-drive ST spec as well as an ST-Line aesthetic package. In the case of the former, you’ll find the same 3.0L EcoBoost V6 as last year’s AWD version, though the tail-happy drivetrain should make its 400hp and 415lb-ft of torque much more exciting. Oh, and, as an added bonus, it’s likely to knock a solid $2,500 off the price tag. And while the ST-Line only gets the Explorer’s standard 2.3L Ecoboost V6 — making 300hp and 310lb-ft — the good news is that it’s been dressed to the nines with visual upgrades. In practice, this means that it effectively mimics a full-on ST in appearance, donning the same blacked-out trim, front fascia, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. Complemented by an ActiveX interior, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a suite of driver-assist technologies, it makes for a solid value proposition. They’ll arrive at dealers in late 2021.
