Automakers love blacked-out limited-editions, and BMW is certainly no exception. Over the past few years, the German-based manufacturer has rolled out any number of sinister special releases, using names like ‘Black Fire’ or ‘Dark Shadow’ to designate their exclusive dark paint schemes. And while most of these have been reserved for the European or Asian markets, this one is actually coming to the USA.
It’s called the X5 ‘Black Vermilion’ edition, and, unsurprisingly, it eschews the chrome of the standard xDrive40i model in favor of a more understated aesthetic. Well, sort of. Because even though it wears a ‘Frozen Black Metallic’ paint job, some darkened LED headlights, and a set of matte ‘Orbit Grey’ 22″ wheels, there’s no ignoring that glossy red kidney grille. After all, the only other color comes from a set of M Sport brake calipers, so it’s quite, uh, distinctive. But BMW didn’t stop there; around the rest of the SUV, you’ll find some aggressive M Sport bumpers and wheel arches, an M Sport exhaust system, as well as some extended Shadowline trim. Complemented by a matching interior shod in plenty of carbon fiber, it’ll be capped at just 350 models total. You can buy it starting at $83,295.
