When BMW unveiled the new M3 and M4 late last year, it was met with widespread disapproval regarding its controversial oversized kidney grille. And while car enthusiasts haven’t exactly come around to the design decision in the months that have followed, the good news is that BMW is bringing some serious automotive heat in order to make amends.
Just take the all-new M4 Competition Convertible xDrive, for instance. Despite the car’s clumsy designation, it should prove to be a pretty significant release within the M family. For in addition to producing some 59hp more than its predecessor, the 2022 model is also the first M4 convertible to feature all-wheel-drive, a potent combination that means the 503hp M TwinPower Turbo engine can take it to 60mph in just 3.6s. And that’s not all; unlike the previous M4 convertible, the 2022 model will return to its soft-top spec, allowing the roof to come in 40% lighter (and markedly better looking) than that of the retractable hardtop. Rounded out by an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, an Adaptive M suspension setup, and a set of staggered, forged-allow 19″ and 20″ wheels, the result is a car primed for some serious open-air enjoyment.
