BMW is driving full speed ahead toward an all-electric future, and they’re doing so pretty darn fast thanks to the new i4 Series. The German automaker has announced the line of electric sedans with two debut models: the standard i4 eDrive40, and the powerful i4 M50 from the brand’s venerated performance marque.
The i4 M50 is the first purely electric performance car from BMW M, and it definitely does not disappoint. Twin BMW M eDrive engines with Sport Boost put out 536 max horsepower and 586 lb-ft, enabling the four-door EV to go from 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. But since this is an M car, you’re getting more than just power. The i4 M50 also boasts an adaptive M chassis, variable sport steering, and a fine-tuned suspension for precise handling, along with such stylistic cues as exclusive badging, Cerium Grey accents, and BMW M wheels and mirrors. The tradeoff is the M50’s range is 60 miles less than that of the i4 eDrive40 (240 miles to 300 miles), but the 200HP boost, 1.8-second reduction in 0-60 time, and other goodies seem worth it to us. Both BMW i4 models are available to pre-order now, with the i4 eDrive 40 starting at $55,400 and the performance-spec i4 M50 priced from $65,900.
