Volkswagen has a long history of transforming unassuming cars like the Golf and into speedy sleepers, so it makes sense that the German brand’s SUVs should get the same treatment. And that looks to be the direction in which VW is headed judging from the new Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept.
The VW Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept takes their existing mid-size SUV crossover and transforms it into a supersized hot hatch. Built on a 2021 Atlas Cross Sport SEL Premium R-Line base, the car adds a number of performance enhancements to beef up the fun factor. Under the hood is a customized version of the turbocharged EA888 2.0 TSI from the Golf R that puts out over 300 hp, and that’s paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. There are also custom 22-inch ABT Sport HR AEROWHEELs, a lowered ST XTA Plus 3 suspension, TAROX eight-piston front brakes, and bespoke RECARO Sportster CS racing seats for four. The special “Eisvogelblau” blue color is found throughout the vehicle, including on the wheels, springs, and shifter. While VW has not announced any plans to bring the Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept to production, the vehicle will make appearances at several events later this year.
