Originally debuting in 1980, BMW’s original R 80 G/S is largely responsible for birthing the modern adventure bike segment, and while it’s evolved a great deal since then, the full-size G/S remains BMW Motorrad’s best-selling model, year after year by a substantial margin. And with 2020 marking the 40th anniversary since the release of the first G/S, the Bavarian brand is marking the occasion via the release of a commemorative model for the 2021 year.
Generating the same 136hp as the 2020 model, the 2021 R 1250 GS remains largely unchanged, save for new adaptive (cornering) LED headlights, heated seat and pillion, Integral ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, and new ride modes, all as standard, plus a host of optional upgrades. The most blatant change is the addition of new livery options, which includes a black and yellow scheme based on the early ‘80s G/S. In addition to the base model, BMW has also revealed the off-road-ready Adventure-spec, as well as an updated baby (310) GS for the 2021 model year. The R 1250 GS Adventure gets full crash protection, auxiliary lighting, luggage racks, a taller windscreen, and numerous other minor touches. Pricing has yet to be revealed, though we expect the new G/S to start at around $18,000.
