Bentley’s 2021 Bentayga Speed Adopts New Tech For Its 626HP Debut

Bentley’s Bentayga has already captivated SUV enthusiasts for years, but — like many of the brand’s beloved vehicles — a performance-focused variant was already in the works behind closed doors. For the 2021 model year, the UK-based manufacturer has introduced an updated version of its Bentayga Speed: a sporty new offering that innovates upon the namesake’s notable strengths.

To give the 20201 Bentayga Speed SUV a look and feel all its own, Bentley has introduced a hand-built, 6.0-liter W12 engine into the mix, resulting in a staggering output of 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the new model can reach 62 miles-per-hour in just under 3.9 seconds, and garner a top speed of 190. Efficiency was a key motivation during the Speed’s design process, allowing Bentley’s engineers to elaborate upon the vehicle’s powerful engine with unique cylinder deactivation and ‘sail’ technology. Instead of maintaining conventional cylinder use during acceleration, this interesting approach allows the Speed to swap between banks based on information from its inlet and exhaust sensors, improving fuel economy and efficiency. Pair that with four dynamic drive modes, an improved suite of interior/exterior upgrades, and Alcantara upholstery, and you’ve got a customizable, on-road experience catered toward the enthusiastic driver.
