Over the course of the last year or two, there has been speculation that we could be nearing the end of video game consoles as we know them. But it looks like we’ll be getting at least one more generation, as Microsoft has just unveiled a groundbreaking new undertaking they’ve called Project Scarlett.

The follow-up to the Xbox One (and all its subsequent iterations), Project Scarlett looks to be a game-changer — both literally and figuratively. The home console is built around a custom processing unit, built upon AMD’s Zen 2 and Navi technology, that gives it the ability to support 8K gaming, frame rates of up to 120fps, a variable refresh rate, ray-tracing, and so much more. On top of that, it’s equipped with a state-of-the-art SSD unit that doubles as virtual RAM — resulting in enhanced performance as much as 40 times over the current generation of consoles. Microsoft is also promising cross-platform gaming and saves, backward compatibility, unheard-of levels of detail, and virtually non-existent load times. Set for a 2020 holiday release, Project Scarlett will launch alongside Halo: Infinite — a spiritual reboot of the legendary sci-fi franchise.
