Mercedes-Benz and their AMG in-house tuning brand are no strangers to being at the forefront of innovation. Yet, even by their standards, their latest project is an impressive one. You see, they’ve just unveiled the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine ever.

Called the Mercedes-AMG M 139, this 2.0-liter power plant is a pretty big step up from the impressive previous edition — boasting a maximum output of 416 horsepower (up by 40) and 369 ft-lb of torque (up from 350). Of course, it’s not just all power and no refinement, as the tuners were also sure to improve the engine’s response time and carefully balance the torque curve — improving the overall agility. Furthermore, this engine (and all its brethren) are being built entirely by hand in a state-of-the-art-facility, helping to bring back personal craftsmanship to the carmaking process. While we can’t wait to see the cars into which they drop this bad boy, we also hope they take what they’ve learned through this process and apply it to some beefier power plants in the future.
