When it comes to movie cars, it’s hard to beat everyone’s favorite Bond ride, the Aston Martin DB5. And while the regular vehicle is a sight to behold, the gadget-filled one from Goldfinger is a cinematic icon unlike any other. And now’s your chance to own one — upgrades and all.
Back when the 1964 spy film was being shot, there were only two 1965 DB5s on set — one that was stripped down for stunt driving and another that featured working versions of Q’s gadget upgrades (used primarily for close-ups). Following the success of the movie and with the hopes of bolstering the upcoming release of Thunderball, two more were built for a press tour — with more durable versions of the John Stears-designed add-ons, including the smoke screen, rear-end bullet shield, pop-out machine guns, and more. This particular example, number three of four, has also benefitted from a full restoration to bring it back to better-than-factory standard. If you want to own a piece of cinematic and automotive history, this Aston Martin DB5 ‘Bond Car’ is headed to the RM Sotheby’s auction block in Monterey this August.
