Back in 2007, The Golden Compass hit theaters but didn’t quite capture the magic of Philip Pullman’s complex fantasy trilogy. Luckily, HBO will be taking a stab at bringing the books to life as a TV series to potentially help us fill in the void once occupied by Game of Thrones. Judging by the trailer for His Dark Materials, it seems like the talent chosen will do justice to Pullman’s work.

The new series is directed by Tom Hooper and features an impressive cast, including James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ruth Wilson. The trailer presents a darker setting in comparison to the typical resplendent environment of fantasy tales, but the first book is packed with mysteries so it works out nicely. If you’ve never read Pullman’s trilogy before, you’re in for a tale of alternate dimensions, rich storytelling, and battles that span the universe. There is no set premiere date yet for His Dark Materials, but the adventure should begin sometime this year.
