Back in 1965, Ford almost single-handedly launched the pony car class with the introduction of the Mustang. It was so successful, in fact, that an entire racing class was based around it — called the Trans Am Series. While the series eventually broadened to include other pony cars and, eventually, other vehicle classes entirely, it would be nothing without the car that started it all. And now, you can get behind the wheel of one of these historical racers.

With an exceptionally well-kept exterior, this 1973 Ford Mustang Trans Am is an impressive, aggressive race car. And while the interior has seen better days, the spartan accouterments speak to its race-ready nature — boasting little other than a roll cage, single bucket seat, and stripped-down dash. While this car will likely never be suitable for on-road driving, a little bit of love could most definitely bring it back into racing shape — and could open up the possibility of partaking in Historic Trans Am races on legendary tracks like Laguna Seca and Watkins Glen. Expected to go for between $65,000-$85,000, this Mustang will hit the block at the end of May during RM Sotheby’s Auburn auction.

Purchase: $65,000+
