The remote villages of Taunje, China preside over an archaic segmentation of life — traditional, simple, and culturally inclined. But, as with many stunning locales in today’s revelatory society, the injection of modern principles and contemporary ideas are always afoot.

The stunning but simplistic Woodhouse Hotel was introduced to the village as an alleviation technique by the Chinese government — citing the need for rural, underdeveloped areas to promote agricultural tourism as a means of monetary revitalization. To undertake this bold project, China’s ZJJZ Architecture Practice was contracted to build a series of dwellings that would draw foreigners to the area. After thorough planning, 10 single-story structures were dispersed along the lush green hillside — constructed using dark, charred timber to maintain a staunch, weatherized facade, and steel foundations for maximized efficiency. The geometric spaces are layered within the foliage and placed at varying heights for a textured approach, while minimalist interiors give way to mid-morning sunlight, panoramic views, and dense afternoon fog cover.
