With vehicles taking a more dramatic approach toward the future of the automotive industry, it was only a matter of time before we began seeing innovative designs take hold. Now, Goodyear has revealed a new autonomous car tire concept that meshes the disciplines of science and engineering, providing a dual-purpose means of transport for futuristic vehicles.

The Goodyear AERO tire is a multimodal asset that will utilize a tilt-rotor design that’s commonly seen in aircraft. Thanks to a dynamic non-pneumatic structure, the tire is able to act as both a functional road variable, as well as an aircraft propulsion system — a series of propeller/fan-like spokes make up the interior of the tire, providing adequate lift and dependable construction that can stand up to high-speed rotation. In concept, the AERO would use magnetic force to create “frictionless propulsion,” referencing light-based, fiber-optic sensors that will keep track of road conditions, structural integrity, and tire wear. Embedded artificial intelligence processors provide the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure data, which the platform’s system will then analyze — later, the vehicle will adapt to either a flying or road-faring mode, depending on the information acquired.
