The Volkswagen Beetle has a long and, unfortunately, complicated history — primarily because of its connection to Germany’s Nazi Party. But by contrast, one of the best and most-positive things to ever come of “The People’s Car” is the now-legendary Meyer’s Manx: a Beetle-based fiberglass beach-cruising buggy that was huge in the ’60s and ’70s. Now, Volkswagen is looking to return to that era with their Electric Dune Buggy Concept.

Capitalizing on the popularity of outdoor-ready vehicles and all-electric powertrains, VW has unveiled just a teaser of this upcoming project — which is said to be based on the brand’s modular electric drive matrix platform (the same one used in their ID hatchback concept, said to be good for 370 miles per charge). Of course, it still boasts Beetle styling cues and lacks both conventional doors and a fixed roof, much like its petrol-powered predecessors. For now, this is just a one-off set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but interest could end up turning it into a production vehicle.
