The space for full-frame mirrorless cameras has been inundated with offerings over the past five years, and with companies like Sony, Nikon, and Leica in the mix, most camera enthusiasts have learned to rely on well-known platforms to scratch their purist itch. Panasonic has been at the forefront of mirrorless tech for some time but has never introduced a full-frame flagship that would compete with the most dominant companies around — a bold strategy that’s primed the company to overtake the mirrorless realm.

Amidst continuing pressure from direct competitors, the Japanese camera manufacturer has finally decided to set aside their DSLR GH4 in lieu of an updated, full-frame mirrorless offering dubbed the Lumix S1R. With a monstrous 47.3-megapixel MOS sensor and exceptional 4K video capabilities, the camera has solidified Panasonic as a frontrunner within the space. Calling upon significant quality-of-life improvements such as a 100K-dot triaxial tilting LCD monitor, a 5,760K-dot 120Hz OLED viewfinder, and an improved five-axis in-body stabilization system, the S1R offers many of the requirements that modern consumers look for in a professional camera, while utilizing a weather-sealed exterior to keep your investment safe from wind, water, and excessively low temperatures. For those who enjoy a simple, all-in-one ecosystem for their favorite lenses, the new S1R will utilize a variable L-Mount system, accepting glass from Leica, Sigma, Panasonic, and any other “L” oriented brand you can get your hands on.

Purchase: $3,700
