A large portion of Japan’s architectural influence might rest in the heritage of the country, but that doesn’t mean new, innovative ideas can’t take hold. The team at FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects are at the forefront of modern design in the eastern locale, and their newest project, Tranquil House, strives to transcend Japan’s traditional architectural principals.

The Tranquil House was built adjacent to a busy roadway in Shiga, Japan, utilizing a series of tiered concrete facades that create an intimate space devoid of outside influence. A pronounced entryway is encapsulated by the home’s central recess, leading visitors toward the living and dining area of the home. The dwelling features a voluminous layout, complete with extended hallways, vertically-reaching dividers, and differentiating levels throughout the space. Perfectly formed angular walls create immaculate shadowing during specific times of the day, allowing light to bounce and play between columns, creating the illusion of spatial depth — a mark of true artistry. Modern furniture and minimalist design elements unite to create a truly mesmerizing familial space clad in black and gray — while cold, muted tones emanate from the home’s plethora of ceramic and concrete overlays.
