When it comes to desktop PC gaming, being able to upgrade your internal tech is the key to beefing up your rig and keeping it relevant for years to come. Unfortunately, laptop computers have never been quite as customizable. So when Alienware announced that their Area-51m gaming laptop was not only the most powerful one in the world but would also offer as-of-yet unheard-of levels of user customization, we were floored with excitement.

The available tech in the Area-51m is nothing to scoff at, with the starting option including an Intel Core i7-8700 processor, RTX 2070 GPU, 1TB hard drive, 8GB of DDR4 memory, and a 1080p 60Hz screen — and that’s just the baseline, with beefier options available for literally all of it. The kicker, however, is that this laptop was designed specifically to be taken apart and upgraded by the user themselves — meaning, no sending it into a shop or worrying about a voided warranty if you do it yourself. In fact, everything — save the display — can be upgraded, including support for up to 64 gigs of RAM, as well as the option to swap the hard drive, the graphics card, the CPU, and the GPU. There are even easy-to-follow instructions to help you take it all apart and put it back together again. There is a catch (or two), however. For starters, this portable PC is pretty hefty compared to other less-customizable gaming machines. The biggest drawback, though, is the starting price point of $2,549. Still, for some hardcore gamers on-the-go it will be well worth it.

Purchase: $2,549+
