Producing designs that appeal to the masses is a tough order to fill, but that is primarily the objective in automotive design – make something people will buy. The alchemists behind the scenes at Dodge seem to have found the the perfect recipe to turn their trucks into gold, and the 2019 Ram 1500 may be the philosopher’s stone.
Working off a hugely successful platform of previous model years, engineers at Dodge did not have to reinvent the wheel for their newest offering. They started by losing 225-pounds of net weight while bumping up the payload to a 2,300-pound capacity and ratcheting the max trailer towable weight to 12,750-pounds. With the reduction in heft, the Ram also gets updated bodying styling and exclusive active aerodynamic features that reduce drag dramatically, adding to the value of the pickup by improving fuel mileage. Adding payload and towing capacity created the need for more powerful breaking with substantial 14.9-inch rotors, providing 18% more pad contact area for serious stopping power. Updates are also present inside the cab, with improvements to driver and passenger ergonomics, user interfaces, and the first implementation of Chrysler’s Uconnect 4C navigation display.
