In 2016 and after 67 years of brilliance (and much to the chagrin of automotive fanatics everywhere), the passing of stricter emissions laws forced Land Rover to halt production on their legendary 4×4, the Defender. As it turns out, however, this “death” was only temporary, as they’ve just now unveiled that the SUV is set to make a return — to the USA, of all places — in the 2020 Land Rover Defender.

Details are a bit scarce, but what we can tell you is this: the next-gen Defender is already well into its testing phase, with mule vehicles being put through their paces to ensure this latest edition is the toughest off-roader the brand has ever built. That includes survivability trials in temperatures as low as -40°F to those as high as 120°F, as well as pushing them to the limit both on- and off-road at up to 13,000 feet above sea level. Pair that with a redesigned interior and exterior, as well as a suite of connectivity and driver assistance features, and this is set to be one of the most monumental rebirths the car world has ever seen. This phoenix will emerge from the ashes in 2020 on the shores of both the United States and Canada.
