Since the earliest days of photography, monochromatic images have been a staple of historical understanding. Some of the most thought-provoking images from the last century have been rendered in shades of gray, but now, thanks to a Jordan Lloyd and Wolfgang Wild, we can see a more familiar and realistic vision of the past.

The Paper Time Machine is a sensational publication that revitalizes historic photographs in near-true color, offering a mesmerizing read that highlights some of the most prominent historical time periods. Focusing primarily from 1843 to 1947, the book immortalizes famous works in an entirely new way, thanks to painstaking research from the authors who worked tirelessly to ensure historical accuracy related to color and atmosphere. It features 124 photos ranging from portraits and documentarian work to artistic endeavors — all of which are presented alongside their original black and white counterparts. Standout photographs include the very first self-portrait, Confederate and Union soldiers throughout the American Civil War, a beardless Abraham Lincoln, and the streets of New York following the surrender of Germany in 1918.
