For about as long as cars have existed, people have been tweaking and tinkering with them to get every drop of potential power out. Yet, with technological advancements, we keep figuring out new and interesting ways to make that happen. This latest method, called the ORBIS Ring-Drive Wheel, is an impressive feat.

Whereas most power boosts come in the form of engine tweaks, this one doesn’t require you to open the hood at all because — as you might’ve guessed — it’s an alteration to your vehicle’s wheels. Essentially, the Ring-Drive is a hub motor that replaces the passive rear wheels of your gas-powered front-wheel drive vehicle, effectively turning it into an AWD hybrid while adding somewhere between 50-100 horsepower to your car’s normal output. It also benefits from other electric powertrain bonuses like regenerative braking and better overall gas mileage. And it’s not just theoretical either, as the brand has tested it out on both a Honda Civic Type R and an HMMWV (better known as a Humvee). There’s no word on when it will be released, but this revolutionary system could potentially change the whole automotive industry for the better.
