It seems like there’s an autonomous car that pops up every month, but a self-riding motorcycle is rare. For the past couple of years, BMW Motorrad has been developing the technology for an autonomous motorcycle to protect riders and they’ve placed that tech in the BMW R 1200 GS.

BMW Motorrad tested the motorcycle on the winding Miramas test track and it passed with flying colors, conquering the course with ease. In what looks like a supernatural scene, the motorcycle accelerates, turns, leans, and stops without the guidance of a rider. Although it would be convenient to summon your bike so it can drive itself from the parking lot to the front door of a restaurant you’re walking out of, there’s a better reason for this self-driving technology. The main purpose of this tech is to give motorcycles the ability to assist the driver in avoiding dangerous situations and collisions. That is an admirable goal we welcome with open arms.
