Though smaller companies like Tesla have certainly motivated a great deal of forward thinking in the automotive universe, the auto world will ultimately rely on the titans of industry — the BMWs, Fords, and Mercedes-Benzes of the world — to sculpt the future. Today, a large leap forward has been made in that respect, by one such giant. Billed as the harbinger of a new age for Mercedes, the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC is more than electric, it’s downright electrifying.

MB’s first full-production electric car, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC is a marvelous crossover SUV that’s fully electric. The SUV is powered by a pair of asynchronous electric motors, located at each end of the car, which power the vehicle’s all-wheel drive. The model’s full name is the 2020 EQC 400 4MATIC, and despite its diesel-deficiency, the car packs a 402-horsepower wallop to go with 564 pound-feet of torque. Though the 80-kilowatt-hour pack only offers a 200-mile range (less than Tesla Model X’s 295 miles), the EQC is more fleshed out and arguably more beautiful than the other AWD EVs on the market. With the trademark luxury and meticulous attention to detail that only a Mercedes-Benz vehicle can offer, the EQC is a landmark next step for the automotive world.
