The 917K (Kurzheck, German for “short tail”) earned Porsche its first wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. But the classic race car didn’t earn worldwide fame until it was featured in the 1971 film classic Le Mans starring Steve McQueen, who drove the blue and orange Gulf Oil car to a second place finish behind his Porsche teammate.
The prolific LEGO Technic builder Pawel Kmieć’s heart was set aflame by the golden age of Le Mans, so he painstakingly reconstructed the famous 917K to build a 1:8 scale remote-controlled tribute that’s rich in detail and high in functionality. Kmieć’s mechanical prowess is nothing short of amazing, his R/C build is complete with working double wishbone suspension, drivetrain and steering system, dihedral doors, a working steering wheel, lights, and custom stickers. The 1970 Porsche 917K changed the racing pedigree for the German auto manufacturer, winning seven of the eight races it entered that year; Kmieć’s version is equally impressive.
