When going through normal daily life, a folding everyday carry knife is probably the most appropriate. But when hiking, camping, or backpacking, a fixed blade will serve you much better. The problem is, when you’re already hauling around a bunch of heavy gear, many fixed blades are a bit bulky and cumbersome. Not Gerber’s new Spine and Vertebrae, however.

Measuring up with a 3.7- and 2.4-inch blade, respectively, both of these knives are compact enough to attach to your belt or slip into your pocket or pack with ease. But, since their built from sturdy and durable 7Cr17MoV steel mated to a grippy synthetic handle, they can take whatever punishment you dole out to them in stride. Along with their small stature, they also weigh just 5.2 and 4.4 ounces, making them a simple addition to even the most crowded bag or body. And their glass-filled nylon sheath ensures that you can carry them easily and confidently from the trail, to your home, and back again. Pricing is set at $40 for the Spine and $31 for the Vertebrae.

Purchase: $31+
