Laser Assault Rifle

Laser guns have long been a staple of science-fiction, from Star Wars to Star Trek and everything in-between. But, as ambitions as inventors are, that’s all they’ve ever been: fiction. Or at least they were, before the unveiling of the ZKZM-500 Laser Assault Rifle.

Envisioned at the Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, these firearms are being likened to the ever-popular AK-47, as far as size and weight go. However, their appearance and ammunition are things of the (near) future. The ZKZM-500 is said to be accurate at a distance of up to 800 meters away (roughly half a mile), causing “instant carbonization” of human skin – even through windows. It can also light clothing aflame or even pierce through metal gas tanks to ignite the fuel within. Even more impressively, the weapon is silent and the beam is invisible, making it an excellent option for covert operations. Plus, it’s said to be able to fire 1,000 2-second bursts per charge. Still in the early phases, this firearm will sell for $15,000 a piece. [H/T: South China Morning Post]
