In the classic 80s film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Alan Ruck’s character Cameron Frye was certain that his father loved his 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California more than he loved his own son. Miraculously, Ferris manages to convince Cameron to allow him to drive his father’s prized possession, before (spoiler alert) it crashes through the glass garage and into the forest below. Cameron goes catatonic, but perhaps he wouldn’t have been as upset had he known this Modena GT Spyder California was not a true Ferrari, but a replica.

For the film, three Ferrari forgeries were created by Modena Design and Development in El Cajon, California. Modena steered as near to a Ferrari likeness as they could, adorning the car with a Ferrari-esque windshield, grill, hood scoops, fender vents and a fiberglass body that was modeled after a Ferrari MG. Though not a real Ferrari, it is a real car, with real power – generated by a 5.0L V-8 engine fed by four downdraft carburetors. With beautiful tan upholstery, a wooden wheel, and of course those period correct dials – including that dreaded odometer – this artifact of movie history is going to fetch a pretty penny. Ironically, this replica may end up more expensive than the car it was copying.
