Auction Block: Steve McQueen Husqvarna 400 Cross

“A Husqvarna 405 at about 12,000 rpm — that’s music. I like being out there in the desert on a set of wheels. You’re really alive out there.” These immortal words were spoken by Steve McQueen, the legendary actor/driver (or is it driver/actor?) who starred in some of the best car and motorcycle films of all time. Now, the Husqvarna 400 Cross that McQueen rode in the 1971 film On Any Sunday is up for auction, and you can experience the same bliss that the King of Cool felt on the back of this bike.

McQueen rode the 1970 “Husky” 400 Cross in the Academy Award-Nominated documentary from 1971 that followed motorcycle racing. McQueen famously balanced his acting career with auto and motorcycle races. This Husqvarna 400 Cross, nicknamed “Husky,” is offered with extensive documentation, including the bike’s ownership card from the California Department of Motor Vehicles bearing the name Solar Productions – which was McQueen’s production company – an entry form for the 1970 Saddleback 500 Senior Race, and a very special memento: an uncirculated 1960 penny, commemorating the year that McQueen’s son Chad was born. The motorcycle also famously appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with a tanned and badass-looking McQueen riding shirtless through the Mojave Desert. The bike was last put up for auction by Bonhams in 2013, and at the time the lot was predicted to sell for $80,000 – $100,000.
