McLaren first used the term for their elongated, oft-spoiler mounted supercars in 1995, when the first McLaren F1 GTR “Long Tail” was produced. They car was made for GT racing, and it fulfilled its intended purpose, claiming overall victory in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Not wanting to let a good thing go, McLaren kept producing Long tails, continuing a victorious tradition until this very day, with their latest, the McLaren 600LT.

You probably can guess what the “LT” stands form, but the “600” in the latest McLaren’s variant title refers to its enormous reservoir of horsepower, generated by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre V8 engine that also creates 457 pound-feet of torque. With a carbon-fiber constructed body, the 600LT is far more lightweight than its predecessor, the 570LT (211.6 pounds lighter, to be exact), with a dry curb weight of just 2,749 lbs. P1 carbon fiber racing seats and lightweight Alcantara also swaddle the austere, racing cabin, helping the 600LT shed even more flab. Still, despite losing weight, the 600LT justifies its sobriquet. The race car in street clothes has been stretched by another 74mm, making it longer than ever.

Purchase: $243,000
